Thinking with your hands to unlock insight, alignment, and action
LEGO® Serious Play® is a facilitation methodology developed at The LEGO Group to support creative thinking, meaningful dialogue, and collective problem-solving.
Participants build three-dimensional models with LEGO® bricks to represent their ideas and then tell the stories behind those models. This combination of building and storytelling turns abstract thinking into something visible, tangible, and shareable — which is why it is called serious play.
Why it works
Our brains are limited in how much information we can consciously hold and articulate at any one time.
However, through the many neural connections in our hands, we often know more than we can easily put into words.
LEGO® Serious Play® is grounded in the concept of “hand knowledge”:
- Using our hands activates different neural pathways
- Engaging both hands stimulates both hemispheres of the brain
- Building makes thinking more concrete, detailed, and accessible
- What is built is easier to understand, remember, and discuss
Instead of relying primarily on verbal discussion — where some voices dominate and others stay silent — participants think through their fingers, allowing insight, imagination, and deeper understanding to emerge.
